英文串烧：Out of Pocket expenses （$**）

7月4日，正好两个月前，一封来往的英文电子邮件这么说：“I'll sell you the *** If you agre to pay for my out of pocket expenses ...”。

这个"my out of pocket expenses"什么意思呢？
Google了一下。
猜，应该是“现金预付价”或者“保本价”的意思吧。

Out of Pocket
　　谈到out of pocket，大家可能都知道它有"赔钱、白白损失"（having suffered a financial loss）的意思。如果用连字符将out of pocket这三个单词连起来，它就变成了一个形容词out-of-pocket，这个单词最基本的意思就是"没钱了"（having no money）。Out-of-pocket expenses 则是指一些需要事先用现金支付的，事后可能可以报销的开销，比如出差时的饭钱、交通费等等。

　　但近来out of pocket成了网上一通俗用语，越来越多的网民用是somebody is out of pocket来表达"某人现在不在这儿"（somebody is not here）的意思。

　　据考证，out of pocket作为"够不着、缺席、得不到"（unreachable， absent， unavailable）的意思至少也有25年了，不过最近在网上还有其它很多领域又热了起来。

　　那么"赔钱"和"缺席"有什么关系呢？如果你不在办公室（out of office），那你往往就失去了赚钱的机会（out of pocket）。"不在办公室"也就渐渐引申为"某人不在这儿"的意思。如果你不在办公室而在外出差，那么你就经常会有一些out-of-pocket expense.

　　Out of pocket还有一个不经常被使用的意思"不合时宜，不在状态"（out of place； out of order）。这层意思源自于四十年代的黑人英语，这里的pocket最早是指有六个落袋的撞球台上的落袋。The Los Angeles Times对这个意思上有这样的解释 "Any outsider who would attempt to engage in that conversation would be out of pocket."
